Our construction company pulled out all the stops to have our house done this week. We needed the final city inspection in preparation for closing escrow on Monday of the next week. We had painters, finish carpenters, electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, and landscapers all working on the house. The city gave the certificate of occupancy after their final inspection. Georgia was then able to get the gas meter installed.
We were invited to have the final walk through on the house on Friday morning at 7AM before Randy went to work. We plead guilty to being excited and had a difficult time sleeping on Thursday night. Friday morning we hurried to the house – almost our house – a mile and a half down the road from the hospital apartments where we currently reside.
It was not like we were really doing anything different than we have for the past 4 months. That is, going and looking at the progress made around the house, but somehow this was different. After all the months of waiting we were almost at the finish line.
Bobby Kamman, the president of Kamman Construction, took us around the house as we checked the lights, appliances, doors, plumbing, windows, etc. He was escorted by his terrier Scruffy. The dog was playing with what looked like a small, white hockey puck. It turned out to be one of the screw covers from a toilet. It was quickly retrieved and the bathroom doors closed.
We found a few small paint touchup spots, that the lights all worked, and all the electrical outlets were wired properly. At the conclusion, we were told that we could take ownership of the house at that point even though we had not signed the papers. This would give us an additional weekend to prepare for all that is happening in the coming week. We gladly accepted and received the keys and garage door openers later that day.
And what you may ask, will we be doing in that precious weekend? Well, Randy will be installing lots of shelving. The garage, pantry, and master closets all need shelving. Our intrepid handyman plans to line the garage with shelving as much as possible. For once, he wants to have the shelves in place before the movers get here. His assistant, Georgia, will be helping as needed, and planning her own jobs for later next week.
This coming week includes signing the papers, furniture delivery (bedroom furniture), appliance delivery (washer and dryer), a programmable thermostat installed, more landscaping, blinds, and start-up with the utilities –electricity, cable and Internet. Finally on Friday the movers take our stuff from storage to the house. Because of problems with transmitting our paperwork from one entity to another, the signing of the papers was moved from Monday to Tuesday.
We’re too excited to sleep and we are not even going to Disneyland. Good bye apartment and hello to our house!
I'm sure I'm not alone among your readers in following the epic saga with interest. Hope all goes well with the shelving and move-in. Thanks for sharing, it's been fun to read!
