It was cold in Yuma this week and especially on Thursday morning. How cold was it? It got down to 30 degrees and froze the remaining lettuce crop! Unlike broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc. (other crops growing here) lettuce is cold sensitive. The cold weather in Yuma even hit the front page of the paper. (Link to Yuma Sun article)
Thursday morning Randy decided to ride his bicycle to work. It was cold enough that he went about a block down the road and right came back. His hands and face were really cold even after wearing long gloves and a helmet liner. He had not thought that he needed to break out his winter gear here so it was packed away and not easily found in the new house. So after driving to work, he told his co-workers “That he needed to move some place warm. “
That night, he read one of his favorite blogs about a bicycle rider in Chicago (Dottie). She was snowed in one day. The second day she could not take staying indoors, and went for a ride as the city recovered from 20 inches of snow and cold to go along with it. If she could ride in those conditions, our favorite bicycle rider could too. http://letsgorideabike.com/blog/
Randy was back at it the next day with winter gloves, balaclava, and a heavier jacket that were found and broken out of storage. It was not as cold as the previous day and he rode the 4 miles to work without complaint because of the warmer gear. The return trip that evening was quite comfortable and he was back to regular riding clothes – shorts and fingerless gloves, his winter gear packed away in the bags on his bike.
Who could believe that Randy would ever want to live a place that is warmer than Yuma?
