It has been a while since we were in a community with a library. Josephine County in Oregon had closed theirs and then reopened them with very limited hours. Yuma has a new library located not far from our house open 12 hours a day during the week and 8 on weekends. We finally got our library cards on Wednesday night after being in Yuma for 9 months.
Libraries have changed a bit since we were last “Card Carrying” members of the community. They now offer electronic books. The great thing is you can download them at home and not have to return them. They expire after 21 days on the electronic reader that you download them to, therefore there are no possibility of library fines.
The selection of material available in this new format is limited but expanding. The result is Georgia came home with five physical books. You can only download the electronic books on your home computer. Oh well, at least we do not need to make bookshelf space for them and she is better at returning books than Randy.
For Christmas this year, we bought each other Barnes and Noble Color Nook electronic readers. They are similar to Amazon Kindle readers, but with certain other advantages to us. We have a Barnes and Noble store in Yuma - close to Randy’s work. We can read most of their electronic books for up to an hour a day free in the store. See http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nookcolor/index.asp?cds2Pid=35700#productimg
On Saturday it was the end of an era for us. We went through our boxes of books in the garage and selected some 14 boxes of books that we no longer need. They comprised mostly of our science fiction and fantasy collection. We will be getting all electronic books as much as possible from now on. We did keep a few science fiction favorites, the rest went to Goodwill. One Nook can hold them all and then some.
With Amazon.com reporting that Electronic Books (e-books) are now out selling the number of physical paperback books as well as exceeding the number of hardback books sold, we not the only ones going with the new media.
Anyway, we wish “Happy Reading” to all of our readers in whatever form you wish.
