For the second day of our trip to San Diego, we decided to go to the Cabrillo National Monument. It is located at the southern tip of the western peninsula in the San Diego area. We found it interesting to drive south through the Navy installation on our way to the monument.
There was a nice visitor center at the monument, and even a heroic size statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, conquistador and discoverer.
The best thing about the monument was the view. We had an excellent lookout of the whole San Diego basin. We saw ships of all sizes coming and going.
There was an old lighthouse at the top of the bluff as well. We were glad that we had brought our jackets as it was a cool, windy day. We heard one woman tell her grandchildren that she was quite ready to go back to Yuma because it was so cold.
In leaving the monument we took a wrong turn toward the new lighthouse at the base of the bluff. In the process of driving down there and returning, all of our cell phones proudly informed us that we were now in Mexico and would have international roaming charges if we made a call.
After eating lunch at a jam-packed Subway restaurant we proceeded on to the Mormon Batallion Monument. There was a replica of one of the early buildings on the site, complete with a heroic sized statue of one of the Batallion members out front. Inside there was a video presentation of the story of the Mormon Batallion. After the presentation we weren't sure what to do next. However, we did see "Old Town San Diego" close by, and decided to see what that was all about.
Friday morning we got ready to check out. As Bob and Char were heading north to see Pat Olson, and we were heading to the temple, we started out together. All four of us had a good time wandering around the grounds. Georgia indulged in her hobby of taking photos of temples. Then it was time to separate for our various destinations.
